Prisoner Set FreeA New Creation
By Shirley Mitchell

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
2 Corinthians 5:17

Do you let your past haunt you?  When an old memory is brought to your mind of some of the things that you used to do that you would never do now, do you wear it like a heavy cloak?  There is an old song by the Eagles called Lying Eyes about this adulterous woman who feels caught in her own web of deceit.  The end of the third verse says:
“Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things
You're still the same old girl you used to be.”

Those words haunted me at one point in my life.  I was so saddened and ashamed of my poor choices.  I had sought to fully change my life and pursue God.  Even though I never heard the song with my ears, I heard it in my mind.  Even though my life looked completely different, was I still the same old girl that I used to be?  Would I still make the destructive decisions that landed me in a mud pit of sin?
I’m thrilled to tell you that I know now the answer is “no!”  Some people will tell you people never change.  Apart from Jesus Christ, that is true.  However, through Jesus Messiah, we can change.  When we ask Jesus to be Lord of our lives and believe in Him, then we become a new creation.  Our old self is dead, and we have been freed from sin’s power.  You and I need to understand one of the most important truths that will free us and lift the oppression that seeks to weigh us down and swallow us.  If you know Jesus as your Savior and Lord, then you are a new creation.  Old things have passed away, and you have been made new.
The Greek word for “new” is kainos which means “new, recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn.” Anyone in Christ gets a fresh start.  We let the past go.  It is gone. We can’t hold onto the wrong things that we have done.  We offer them to God and let Him pour out His healing balm.  We may use them every day in ministry although we don’t mention them.  But they don’t keep us trapped in a jail cell by the chains of guilt and condemnation.  They don’t rule.  He does.
If God can use me, He can use anyone.  I don’t have to hide in the church.  I don’t have to sit on the back row and accept the lie that I have been saved but certainly not useable by God for His kingdom.  I have been changed from being born of sinful man to being born of the Spirit of the Living God.  His Holy Spirit lives in me, and He lives in you.  Beloved, do you understand that you are a new creation?  You don’t have to be haunted by your past or listen to the hiss of the evil one that you are still the same old person that you used to be.  You are a new, recently made, creation with a fresh start.
Pray with me:  Lord, we praise You!  Thank You for making us new!  How thrilling to think that we have been set free from the old way of life.  In You, we can change.  We are no longer trapped in our old self.  We are like prisoners discharged from our cell, and we choose to never return.  Thank You for making us a new creation!  In Jesus’ Name, we pray.  Amen.
