Shirley MitchellWise Builders

By Shirley Mitchell

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.  But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

Matthew 7:24-27

Before I walked with Jesus, the storms in my life crashed my house down.  Since I committed my life to Him, the storms haven’t crashed my house, but they still happen.  Storms can be induced by self, other people, demons, the natural world we live in, or even God.  Most of my storms were self-induced before I walked with Jesus.  Praise God the self-induced storms are fewer and spaced out more.
You and I don’t need a weatherman to tell us a storm is coming.  God’s Word tells us storms will come.  When I lived in Guam, we had a disaster preparedness plan for typhoons and earthquakes.  When I lived in Mississippi, we had a disaster preparedness plan for hurricanes.  If you know you live in a place that gets hit by storms, you prepare!
We prepare for the storm by building our houses on the Rock.  If we have let Him illuminate our minds, if we have a heart for Him, and if we are praying disciples, then we will be prepared for a storm.  This passage talks more about disaster preparedness through wisdom.  We put His words into practice.  We don’t just do a Bible study.  We apply the Scripture we learned to our lives.
Someone who wants wisdom will hunt for it like she searches for hidden treasure (Proverbs 2:1-10).  She listens and applies the teaching of the wise (Proverbs 22:17-18).  She has wise friends to grow wise (Proverbs 13:20).  She lets the Word of Christ richly dwell in her (Colossians 3:16).  She asks God knowing that He gives generously to all who believe (James 1:5-6).
Hebrews 5:14 (AMP) says, “But solid food is for full-grown men, for those whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law.”  God’s Word should be used constantly as a steady, daily diet to shape our minds.  There is no shortcut to spiritual maturity.  It happens one day at a time.  This verse says our mental faculties as well as our senses are trained by practice.  This includes our sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing.  We are challenged to have a deep relationship with God where we can distinguish the difference between good and evil.
There are many characteristics of a wise woman.  A wise woman holds her tongue (Proverbs 10:19), uses her tongue to bring healing (Proverbs 12:18), wins souls (Proverbs 11:30), listens to advice (Proverbs 12:15), keeps herself under control and does not get angry (Proverbs 29:11), makes the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:15-17), and loves a rebuke so she will grow wiser from instruction (Proverbs 9:8-9).
When we gain wisdom we gain so many other wonderful blessings.  There are many benefits of wisdom.  Wisdom is worth more than silver, gold, and rubies.  Wisdom brings long life, riches, honor, pleasant ways, paths of peace, enduring wealth, and prosperity (Proverbs 3:13-18; Proverbs 8:17-18).  Whoever finds wisdom finds life and receives favor from the LORD (Proverbs 8:32–35).
Do you need some honor in your life?  If you have the wisdom of God, you are esteemed by God.  Do you need some peace in your circumstances?  Gain God’s wisdom and you can have some peace, too!  Are you lonely?  Do you need some friends?  Gain God’s wisdom and you will have friends.  Here is my favorite one though:  gain God’s wisdom and we find LIFE and favor with God.  John 1:4 says that life is found in Him.  When we become wise, we find life that is only found in Him.  We find Him.  Not only do we put aside foolishness and poor decisions and step into wisdom, we get the best prize of all – HIM!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Oh, I pray you are saying some sort of praise right now, too.  We have found the narrow road that leads to life.  Hallelujah!  We have Life!
I am so encouraged to be wise and build my house on the Rock.  Does this encourage you to be a wise builder?  Does this encourage you to keep yourself under control and to make the most of every opportunity?  Does this encourage you to be teachable?  Does this encourage you to win souls for Him?  Does this encourage you to hold your tongue when appropriate and use speech that brings healing?  Walk with wise companions.  Listen to wisdom, and apply it to your life.  Lastly, take the solid food and not the baby’s milk of God’s Word.
Beloved, the storm is coming someday.  Matthew 5:45 says, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.  The rain, the flood, the hail, and all types of storms will fall on both the wise and the foolish builder.  As wise builders, we have a sure foundation though.  We have the Rock - the immovable and indestructible Rock whose works are perfect (Deuteronomy 32:4).  Hallelujah!
Pray with me:  Oh, LORD, my God, I want to be a wise builder.  I want to build on the Indestructible Rock, not the sinking sand.  I want to find the life that I’ve always wanted.  Make me teachable.  Help me keep myself under control, hold my tongue, and use speech that brings healing.  I ask You for wisdom.  I believe that You will give it to me because I place myself in a position where You can bless me.  When someone describes my character, may it be that I am a wise woman.  It’s in the Name of The Rock, The Master Carpenter, and Builder that I pray, in Jesus’ Name, Yeshua’s Name, I pray.  Amen.
