A New Year
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 1/2/2012 4:12 PM
Happy New Year! I love it when the clock strikes 12:00 midnight on New Year’s Eve and the next year begins. Some people think it is just a change of the calendar. For me, the New Year symbolizes the beginning of something and with God a better something. For me, the New Year symbolizes another year to fulfill God’s wonderful plan and purpose for my life.

Number
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/30/2011 9:14 AM
At the beginning of every year, I take time to ponder over the year ahead and to evaluate my life. After spending time in prayer, I write down my list of goals for the year. When I was younger, it was a list of resolutions. However, resolutions were promises that I couldn’t keep. Once I broke it, guilt and inadequacy would contend for places in my heart.

Reflect
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/21/2011 12:02 PM
I’m one of the few people who still send out Christmas cards and take the time to send a Christmas letter. I have not stepped into the electronic age of sending it through email or facebook. Plus there is just something about a letter that you can hold and read. Every year someone replies to me and tells me how much it meant to them and encouraged them. However, I know God has me do it for me, too.

The Outwitted’s Rage
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/21/2011 11:57 AM
King Herod was a monster. He was a brutal, power-thirsty ruler. Out of fear that they might take away his kingdom, he had his wife and three sons killed. Out of his desire for greatness, he rebuilt Solomon’s temple. Out of his desire to be mourned, he ordered that at his death that a representative from every Israeli family be put to death so there would be wailing when he died. Thankfully, his command was not carried out by his son.

Today a Savior was Born!
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/21/2011 11:52 AM
Merry Christmas! O, precious friend, what a great day it is! Today we celebrate the greatest gift ever given – God’s Son born in the city of David. He was the Christ, the Messiah. The angels announced to the shepherds that a Savior was born to them and for us, too. The greatest King was born in the humblest of settings. This day changed the entire world forever.

Holy and Joyful Night!
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/21/2011 11:48 AM
Tonight is the night of Christmas Eve masses and services around the world. 2,000 years ago angels came from heaven’s realms to a field in Bethlehem. We do not know what time of day Christ was born. It is probably because the angels appeared to the shepherds at night that I have always thought the shepherds came to see Jesus after midnight on Christmas Eve, but before sunrise on Christmas Day.

The Magi and the Star
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/21/2011 11:45 AM
Scholars tell us Magi were scientists, mathematicians, historians, and astrologers. They were the most powerful group of advisors in the Babylonian empire. As a teenager, Daniel was taken to Babylon when Jerusalem was conquered. He became an influential leader in the kingdom. Daniel wrote his prophecies about 500 years before Jesus was born. In Daniel 9:25-26, he prophesied 483 years would elapse from the issuing of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem until the birth, life, and death of the Messiah.

A Treasure to Ponder
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/21/2011 11:33 AM
God’s Word does not record the many details between Joseph’s dream and this holy day in Bethlehem. I am looking forward to the heavenly version of the DVD to answer some questions. Did her parents support Mary, or were they ashamed? Was her labor quick and easy? What was Joseph’s reaction when they arrived in Bethlehem to find there was no room for them in the inn? Did he berate himself for not taking better care of his family?

In Those Days
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/18/2011 2:11 PM
Most of my mother’s grandchildren have all memorized Luke 2 in second grade. I held my breath when my middle daughter Sophia had to say it with her whole class at the Christmas program at school. We worked day and night, car rides and bath times on those verses. My youngest daughter Victoria is not even in second grade yet, and she can say the first verses because she heard them so many times.

Joseph: A Righteous Father
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 12/15/2011 9:35 PM
Joseph and Mary were engaged to be married. According to their Jewish customs, the marriage contract was written and signed by her father. Joseph had been to her home. He had offered her the betrothal cup. She drank from it. Later, he learned that she was pregnant. Joseph knew instantly that the baby was not his, but he didn’t know immediately the identity of the father. At this time, he only knew the logical and righteous thing to do. He wouldn’t expose her publicly, but he would handle it privately.
