Daily Devotions

In the Beginning
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 8/31/2011 3:27 PM
When I first read John 1:1-5 as an adult, this passage was such a mystery to me. Now, through the teaching of the Holy Spirit and many godly teachers, this passage is now a treasure to me. When I read it now, I no longer stumble over the words and let their meaning fly by me. I have begun to understand the bountiful riches that they hold. God has written these Scriptures on my heart.

Our Daily Bread

The Israelites had just been through an amazing experience. They had seen the God of the Universe’s power displayed through the parting of the Red Sea to free them from their enslavement to the Egyptians. Can you just imagine with me passing through on dry ground next to a wall of water suspended only by the sheer might of God? Then the Red Sea had crashed over top of their enemies to allow them to pass into the desert unimpeded.

John the Baptist said of Jesus in John 3:30, “He must become greater; I must become less.” He knew his ministry would dwindle when Jesus’ time had come. However, knowing it will happen and living it out are two different things. In Matthew 11:1-6, John was in Herod’s prison for confronting the king with his sin of adultery with his brother’s wife. He was alone in a dark prison cell.

A Sweet Perfume

Not that long ago, Grace’s grandmother gave her a small sample bottle of a wonderful fragrance called Beautiful by Estee Lauder. It is a very light fragrance for the most part. However, when a 4 year old and a 7 year old get into a perfume spraying contest, the end result can be most overwhelming.

A Display of His Splendor

When Sophia was just a toddler, Doug found an 18 inch black walnut tree growing near our air conditioning unit that had just volunteered. Being a gardener extrardinar, Doug uprooted that tree and replanted it in solid, fertile ground that would receive plenty of sunlight so it could grow. He gave it the best place in the yard where it could grow tall and provide shade and shelter to our family for many years to come.

Sun Stand Still Audacious Prayers

The Lord had promised Joshua that He would deliver his enemies into his hands, and not one of them would be able to withstand him (Joshua 10:8). As the sun was setting, the battle had gone well with the Amorites starting to flee into the valley, but the victory was not complete. Joshua knew when it got dark, the enemy would slip away under a cover of darkness. He wanted total victory.

He Knows

When my husband Doug needs some help finding things in the house, he doesn’t go to me or our oldest two daughters. He asks our youngest daughter Victoria. When he doesn’t know where he left his keys, she’ll jump up, run to the exact location, and bound back to her father with the keys. When we forget what time a party starts, we ask Victoria (Tori).

An Invitation To Dinner

Have you ever been in a corporate time of worship and it has felt spiritually dead? I sure have. In fact I just recently experienced this, and it was frustrating to say the least. I would like to share with you today something the Lord laid on my heart recently. Before I do, I want to say this: I know God is all powerful, and He can show up any place and at any time without our asking.

The Favor of the King

Last year, God had me camped in the book of Esther for close to a month learning more and more about her and all that she went through. The entire story of Esther is fascinating, especially from the perspective that God’s name is never directly mentioned in the book; yet, one can see the weavings of God throughout the entire story line.

A Life that Really Matters

Jesus said in John 12:8 when Mary poured out the oil from her alabaster box to anoint Him for His burial, “You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” As long as the curse of sin is in the world and the curse of sin is on the ground that requires man to toil and to remove the thorns and thistles (Gen 3:17-18), then there will be plenty of people in despair.
