He Inhabits Eternity
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/29/2011 7:51 AM
God’s Word is Alive! It breathes life into those who sincerely search for help, truth, answers, meaning, purpose, righteousness, and above all God Himself. Sometimes just a simple Scripture will rejuvenate and refill me so that my heart leaps and soul bounds in worship. My countenance goes from heavy and dark to uplifted and bright. Today’s verse Isaiah 57:15 did it for me. I just sat and stared at this verse for the longest time thinking about it. God just continues to stun me.

Shield and Great Reward
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/28/2011 8:13 AM
Whenever a Bible verse starts with “after this,” we should ask ourselves “after what ‘this’?” What happened before Genesis 15:1 to prompt the LORD to come to Abram in a vision and tell him, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. Reading back through Genesis 14, Abram’s beloved nephew Lot was taken captive as the plunder from a battle between two groups of kings. Lot was on the losing side with the king of Sodom and king of Gomorrah who ruled two of the most wicked cities ever on the face of the earth.

Genesis 14 tells us the story of 10 kings and Abram. In Abram’s time, most cities had their own king. Four kings had united to make war against five kings and battle in the Valley of the Dead Sea or the Valley of Siddim. The four kings were: Amraphel, King of Shinar, Arioch, King of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer, King of Elam, Tidal, King of Goiim

The Tango of the Two Realities
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/24/2011 7:49 AM
I once heard a pastor speak about balancing the “now” and the “not yet.” His sermon was regarding our present state in a world consumed with a dated calendar and our eternal existence unrestrained by time. I suggest that we also engage in a different tango of two realities: who we are at the present and who God has destined us to become.

Heightened Security
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/23/2011 2:37 PM
My job at work requires me to fly quite often. So, I am a seasoned traveler and have grown very accustomed to all of the adventures of getting through airport security. I have my packing down to a science, including my liquids, so that I rarely have any difficulties going through the security preparations. There are no liquids over 4 oz. in my belongings, and I have all of the liquids contained within a Ziploc bag according to all of the FAA regulations.

Bite-Sized Chunks

My youngest daughter Victoria is adopted from China. She spent her first year in an orphanage that took pretty good care of her by their standards. For many months after bringing her home, we only placed small portions on her plate. We replenished them after she ate what she was given. Why? If we gave her too much food at the same time, then she would try to put all of the food in her mouth. She looked like a chipmunk preparing for winter.

Holy Spirit Power

The context of this verse is when Jesus’ appeared to His disciples for the final time after His resurrection. His disciples asked Him if He was going to restore the kingdom of Israel in verse 6. They knew the Scriptures that Israel would be restored by their Messiah. They knew Jesus was the Messiah. In verse 7, Jesus told them, “It is not for you to know the time and dates the Father has set by His own authority.”

Tooth Fairy on Vacation

As a mom, I’ll be quite open with you that I have had trouble balancing everything that I am supposed to do. It’s hard to juggle a full-time demanding job outside the home with homework, school projects, activities, chores, teaching life lessons, lessons about Christ, being a wife, daughter, sister, friend, and in Christian Ministry.

Peace in the Lord
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/17/2011 7:45 AM
The past few days God has really been laying on my heart a particular passage, and I have literally been digging deeper into this. I'd like to share what I have written thus far about it. I want to break this apart so we can digest the complexity and simple truth that Paul is writing.

Be Ever Watchful
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/16/2011 1:30 PM
Back in ancient times, especially those with knights and castles, there was always a guard on the top of the wall or the tower. The job of the guard was to stand ready and watch for whoever might be approaching the castle. Guards stood watch all day and all night, taking turns throughout the hours so they would not grow weary of watching and miss someone approaching. If the person approaching was a friend, or even better the master of the castle, the guard would immediately relay a message to open the gates and welcome the traveler home.
