Are You Authentic?
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/28/2010 5:47 AM
What was Jesus’ point about praying in front of other people and praying in private? Did Jesus not want other people to know the prayer warriors in town? Did He want His followers to lead separate lives from other believers? Is it a sin to pray in front of other people because it doesn’t show humility? Or was there something deeper?

The Desperate Cry of the Hungry
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/27/2010 3:49 PM
The LORD told Elijah to leave Kerith Ravine and journey 100 miles to Zarephath of Sidon. In Zaraphath, the LORD had commanded a widow to supply him with food. So Elijah obeyed and did as God said. His schedule was completely God’s. He didn’t say any “but first’s” or “hold on’s. He didn’t question with a “Do what’s?”. He just went.

Memorial Stones
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/23/2010 9:29 AM
Several months ago I was blessed to be in a worship service that was nothing but people sharing their testimonies and proclaiming what the Lord had done in their lives. As I sat there listening I thought of our children. None of them were in there to hear all the Lord had done in the lives of their friends and family! I heard the words, "memorial stones," in my spirit and I felt a wave of grief for our children.

Making the Grade
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/22/2010 7:41 PM
Ah, the first day of school…honestly, I think the parents get more anxious and excited about it than the kids. When my son started first grade, it was such a neat experience as he was no longer just a “kindergartner” but now knew the school, and the teachers and kids knew him. He knew where things were and what to expect from the teachers. And, now he knows how to take tests – daily tests, weekly reviews, advanced reader quizzes, pop quizzes, and the list goes on and on.

The Three Bad Soils
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/22/2010 7:39 PM
In the parable, the farmer willingly scatters the seed on soil he knows is unproductive. God allows His words and His opportunity for a relationship to fall on people who will not receive Him. God has abounding love for the unreceptive heart. He sows even if the intended receiver never welcomes the seed.

Seek First
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/20/2010 2:24 PM
I hope that you have been looking forward to Tuesdays when we are working on the spiritual discipline of Scripture memorization. This week’s verse is Matthew 6:33. Many years ago, my husband came down the stairs on New Year’s Day and declared that this verse was the verse God gave him for the whole year.

Exposed and Refined
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/19/2010 11:02 AM
After some time passed, the brook dried up because there was no rain in the land. Elijah had watched the water line lower and lower day after day. It would have been easy for him to place a stick or a marker at the water line and watch it shrink each day. Now the word of the LORD came to Elijah again. God commanded him to go to Zarephath in Sidon where a widow would provide for him.

Heavens Water Jars
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/16/2010 8:17 AM
You know the dread you feel when you have to battle the rain? Your umbrella is in the trunk so you have to try some method to stay dry. Then there's the traffic. Where I live people seem to forget how to drive in the rain.

Time for Restoration
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/15/2010 4:34 PM
My husband’s mom recently retired after over 30 years in the nursing field. And while retirement is supposed to be a time of rest, she and my father-in-law have instead tackled a wide array of projects aimed at restoring their house in Tennessee and their lake house in Kentucky. Especially the lake house in Kentucky requires work as it is over 40 years old and in need of much repair.

The Incorruptible Seed
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 7/14/2010 7:40 AM
Jesus explains in verse 11 that the seed is the Word of God. It is the same seed in all four cases. Imagine Jesus encircled by His disciples who were hanging on every word out of The Word’s mouth. There were no sleep drifters here. They did not know yet that they would be catalysts and filled with the Holy Spirit to proclaim the truths they had learned.
