Leah: Swapped Bride
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/30/2010 11:01 AM
When Jacob saw his Uncle Laban’s daughter Rachel, it was love at first sight. He was so spellbound by her that he rolled away a stone to impress her. Love-struck Jacob agreed to work for Laban for seven years in return for his daughter Rachel’s hand in marriage. After seven years, Laban threw a feast with all the people to celebrate the marriage. However, he followed the family motto “want it, manipulate to get it.”

The LORD is Your Life

I hope that you have been looking forward to Tuesdays where we are working on the spiritual discipline of Scripture memorization. This week’s verse is Deuteronomy 30:20a. It was the first Bible verse that I prayed for my daughter Sophia daily after she was born. Please join me in memorizing these verses and implanting God’s thoughts into our minds.

After his bold confrontation with Israel’s most evil king and queen, God gives Elijah his next assignment. Hide. He had just stared down the strongest force of his day, and God tells him to go hide. God did not tell him to go through the streets shouting to the people that they needed to repent. No, God told him to get away from here.

A Good Foundation

Recently I have been struggling with pain in one knee. Then the second knee decided to get in agreement with the first knee and hurt also. It has been very trying in that I would find myself mapping out my trip in the grocery store so I did not have to walk any further than necessary. I went to the doctor who pronounced the dreaded word arthritis.

The Chair
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/24/2010 10:04 AM
At work, we recently had a meeting with a very important customer. The meeting required weeks of advance preparation on many people’s part to ensure that the correct people were in attendance and that the correct message was going to be given. I was to attend and give a demonstration concerning some of our more advanced solutions that would greatly benefit the customer. I arrived at the meeting about 30 minutes early to ensure everything was set up. To my humility, there was no chair or nametag for me.

I have been faithfully reading every night to my kids from a picture Bible that turns even the Books of the prophets into stories with pictures for every scene. When we studied Isaiah, we saw him plead with the people to destroy their idols and only worship God. He warned the kings what would happen if they continue in idolatry and disobedience, but the kings ignored the warnings.

Memorizing God’s Word
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 6/22/2010 5:39 PM
Since God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts, it is time to start meditating on God’s thoughts. I’m going to start taking every Tuesday to share with you either verses that God has called me to memorize and place in my arsenal or the verse that He has called me to memorize that week. God has been speaking to me about spiritual disciplines that built my relationship with Him and calling me to get back to foundational blocks of my relationship with Him.

As the LORD Lives

The first mention of Elijah is in 1 Kings 17:1 when he confronts King Ahab and declares there would be a drought that lasts a few years. There is no descriptive introduction of him. There is no list of his genealogy which would have been the appropriate Jewish introduction. In fact, the only background given about Elijah is that he is from Tishbe, which is a village that no one has ever found. Gilead was known and is known for its mountains.

Love Grown Cold

I purposefully try not to watch the news any more but you almost can't get away from all the reports of the evil and wickedness in our world. It is often the subject of conversation, it's on the welcome screen when you check your e-mail, as you wait in the drive-thru you can't help but read the headlines of the negative reports around the world. Bad news sells; it's what people want to hear.

Do You Trust Me?

Ah, I had just finished a rather difficult business trip and was so excited to be back in the continental United States and on the highway driving home to my family. The week had not gone as I had hoped, not completely a bust, but certainly not all that I had anticipated that it would be with the preparations we had made.
