Even Elijah Was Afraid
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/30/2009 11:41 AM
Now, to get the full effect of these verses, you have to go back and read 1 Kings 18 to understand what Elijah had just been through. Elijah had just been through an amazing mountain top experience with God and then came crashing down to the reality. Satan’s lies worked their way into Elijah’s mind and paralyzed him with fear.

The Closest Nail
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/30/2009 11:40 AM
In the Jesus Lives Bible study (p.28), Shirley offered us a challenge, “Have you decided to be ‘the closest nail’ available for God’s purposes?” Years ago the Lord challenged me in the same way. But what did that mean? I asked the Lord for a Scriptural description of the Master Carpenter’s question and felt like the answer came in the above verse.

The Wedding Feast
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/28/2009 8:32 AM
“Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” The Father will spare nothing in celebration of His only Son’s marriage. I imagine that God will display His glory unlike ever before. The splendor will be magnificent. It will be a feast of rich foods. There will be jubilation and unbridled elation. All the tribes, nations, and tongues will be there. Every generation will be there. His bride has made herself ready. She is radiant and wears fine linen, bright and clean.

My son loves going to Kid’s Place. It’s this huge indoor playground and his opportunity to exert a ton of energy. I have come to appreciate such a place because it allows me to have some “me time” and read or study. Even amidst all the noise of screaming kids and the sound of games I am able to focus my attention and get a lot done.

Blessed Are

Matthew 4:23-25 tells us, “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them.”

A Perfect Prayer
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/23/2009 9:08 AM
Do you ever get carried away praying your plans for a friend or loved one? Have you included detailed suggestions as to the perfect answer for an urgent prayer need? Recently when this happened to me I was reminded of the passage in the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:10. I am to pray God's will on earth as it is in heaven. I had it backwards!

The Refiner's Fire
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/22/2009 8:59 AM
A refiner’s fire…Just picture it with me now. A blazing hot furnace stands ready to burn off any material that is not of the purest gold. Gold mixtures with various impurities are placed in a ceramic container and are then exposed to the intense temperature of a furnace that has been heated upwards of 2000 oF. The high temperatures are necessary to get all of the materials into a liquid form so that the impurities would float to the top of the mixture.

The Creativity of God
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/21/2009 2:38 PM
As I was praying and asking for a simple example to explain that we can never put God’s creative display of His power in a box, He reminded me of a conversation that I had with my sister Linda. She asked me, “Shirley, your daughter Sophia is such a unique child who marches to the beat of her own drum. Did you do anything to spur such creativity and personality?”

Taming the Tongue
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 10/20/2009 9:44 AM
Many years ago, my family went to Walt Disney World for a wonderful time of vacation. Spring that year was very hot and very, very dry. It had not rained for several months prior to us heading down to Florida, and so we knew that the risk of forest fires popping up was extremely high. We had only been there for a few days when we began to hear reports that a forest fire had indeed began.

Larger and Stronger

About a month ago, Phil who is a Christ Compels Board Member was contacted through Facebook by an old friend from high school. Her husband and she live in Thailand now. He is working there for a pharmaceutical company. Their church group in Bangkok is doing approximately 120 boxes for an orphanage in Mae Sot, Thailand. The orphanage in Mae Sot is populated by Burmese children who have fled Myanmar with or without their parents.
