The King's Daughters
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/30/2009 7:01 AM
When I was a little girl, my parents treated me like I was a princess. My father esteemed his daughters. He would spin us around in the back yard after he finished his work day. My mother taught us grace and how to be an elegant lady. They showered us with hugs and kisses. So I truly thought I was a princess. I was a vibrant child full of confidence and giggles.

Last spring I was asked to give the devotion at a Victorian tea party. What God laid on my heart was a strong impression of what such a time of fellowship represented. In days long ago, a tea party had crisp linens, fine china, refreshing tea, delectable eats…What God pieced together for me from all those images that danced through my mind was what an awesome array of “treasures”. The Hebrew roots for treasures have several different meanings. “owtsar” is “a depository, an armory, a store house.” The root “genez” means “a treasure chest”, and “matmown” indicates a secret storehouse or valuable (referring to buried), hidden riches.

Day of Atonement
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/28/2009 1:18 PM
Today is the Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur, the High Holy Day for Jews. This Holy Day falls 10 days after Rosh Hashanah on the 10th of Tishri which is the Hebrew month that correlates with September-October on our calendars. This sixth of the seven feasts speaks of atonement.

The Dusty Road

Questapalooza was here! It was the day my youngest son had been looking forward to for quite a while. He was excited about the rides and games and I was looking forward to hearing Jars of Clay and Third Day. What I had not done was bought our tickets in case the event was rained out. It ended up being a beautiful day so we headed out early to get in the ticket line.

Sweet Victory
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/28/2009 1:17 PM
We have all heard the term "sweet victory" at some point in our lives, most likely associated with a game that was being played. I have always loved sports, which is probably par for the course since my dad was a high school wrestling coach. We used to love sitting on the couch together on Saturday and Sunday afternoons watching football games and rooting for our favorite teams.

Prayer for Our Soldiers

Last week, at gymnastics practice, I sat on the observation deck with the mother of my daughter Sophia’s best friend. Her husband is leaving for Iraq to serve as a chaplain there. He is quite excited to be serving the LORD at this time because God is working in the lives of our military. Two days later, while taking my other daughter Mikayla’s friend home from soccer practice,

Prescription for a Downcast Soul
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/22/2009 9:32 AM
For several years, I lived in a very dark time where I was fearful whether I would even survive. Family and friends, I felt, had deserted me. My job was falling apart. Most of all, I feared God had walked away from me for all I had done. My prodigal spirit continually fought against what I knew I should be and how I should be acting, and I made some extremely poor decisions. I slipped into a depression that I just knew I could never overcome.

Triumphal Procession
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/21/2009 10:11 AM
In ancient Rome, the triumphal procession was a public parade. They celebrated the military accomplishments of the commander who had great military success. He was elevated to near-kingly status for the day of triumph. Since the video cameras did not exist to capture the actual video footage of the war, artists painted the battle scenes which were carried through the procession. People lined up on rooftops to capture any sight of the battle. The enemy kings were chained and forced to walk the way of humiliation past the onlookers and jeerers.

Rosh Hashanah
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/18/2009 8:21 AM
In Leviticus 23:1, God spoke to Moses, “…These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies .” The rest of the chapter describes the seven feasts. Tonight begins the fifth of the seven Jewish feasts - Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets, the Jewish New Year! Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year.”

Shekinah Glory
Devotions and Christ Compels Updates 9/17/2009 7:46 AM
On Mt. Sinai, God gave Moses the 10 Commandments. In Exodus 25:8-9, 21-22, God tells Moses to make the tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant. God wanted to meet with them and give His instructions to His chosen people. He would dwell with them, and they could fellowship with Him. He would meet with His people over the Ark of the Covenant.
