Those Guilty Stains
Daily Devotions 8/31/2009 12:12 PM
Picking up my little girl, Grace, from preschool is such a fun time. We talk the whole way home about her day - what she has done, who she played with, what types of activities she did, and crafts she made. But, most importantly we talk about what she has eaten throughout the day – from breakfast in the morning, all the way through snack time in the afternoon. Now, there are times when I have to hold my tongue when she is trying to tell me about her lunch because I already have a pretty good idea what it might have been without seeing her papers or hearing her stories. How you might ask? Because the front of her shirt is covered in stains from the day’s meals – especially tomato soup.

I just finished reading this fiction trilogy about a world where the spiritual things that happen in our world are more visible. In our world, the forces of good and evil cannot be seen. We can only see their effects. In the world of the book, good and evil were obvious and marked by visible traits.

No Halfway
Daily Devotions 8/25/2009 4:23 AM
While we were at the lake several weeks ago, the priest at the local Catholic Church we attend with Tony’s parents told us a story about a turtle he had seen on the road. He was telling everyone that as he drove by, the poor turtle was stuck in the middle of the street. Apparently he had seen those double yellow lines and thought that he had to be in the “safe zone,” stopping halfway across the street.

Hide and Seek
Daily Devotions 8/24/2009 3:25 AM
My kids love to play hide and go seek, especially in my kitchen and laundry room. Nathan is getting much better at it where he does not start giggling while hiding. He is also getting good at choosing his hiding places, much more so than just a year ago. Grace, on the other hand, typically hides in the same place that she just found the previous hider. We have to wonder around for a few minutes pretending not to know where she is before going back to find her.

God's Armor: The Sword of the Spirit
Daily Devotions 8/21/2009 3:45 AM
There is no weapon more elegant than a sword. For centuries, the sword was the weapon of choice for gentlemen in their battles. More movies that you can count have been dedicated to stories about knights, and swords, and sword fighting. Even little boys, in their play, will pick any normal household item (like balloons even) and make it into this dueling weapon.

God's Armor: The Shield of Faith

Something about armor has always intrigued me and held my interest. Quite possibly it was all of those romantic movies and stories where the knight in shining armor rescued the fair maiden from her evil captor and they lived happily ever after. Or maybe it was the idea of our military and the protection and safety that it represents.

Hope of Glory
Daily Devotions 8/19/2009 4:25 AM
Colossians 1:25-27 tells about a mystery that has been hidden for ages but is now disclosed to the saints. There are glorious riches in this mystery. This mystery is Christ in us, the hope of glory.

Hearing or Truly Listening
Daily Devotions 8/19/2009 4:18 AM
One of the most rewarding things I have found in life is being a parent. Children are such a blessing from God, and I thank Him every day for the ones He has given me. They have taught me so many things over the years, but they have especially taught me patience in learning how to discipline them when they have done wrong. And probably one of the areas that we focus on over and over again is actually listening to what we are telling them to do, versus just hearing our words and never doing a thing about it.

Set Apart
Daily Devotions 8/16/2009 8:51 AM
Praise God we, YOU friends, have been chosen, set apart, and called to be a messenger for the Gospel of God before we were even formed in our mother’s womb!!

In the World, Not of It
Daily Devotions 8/13/2009 3:41 AM
On Jesus’ last night as a man on earth, He prayed fervently for His disciples and for all who would believe in Him through their message. He did not pray for us to be taken from the world to a safe place. Instead, He prayed for the Father’s protection for us from the evil one. He prayed for us to not be of the world, just like He was not of it.
