Discipline Hurts and Heals
Daily Devotions 6/29/2009 5:25 PM
When I was a little girl and had done something wrong, my parents would quickly come and discipline me. Sometimes my infraction would only require a stern word, sometimes time by myself to think about it, and sometimes it was severe enough of a wrongdoing to spank me and set it right again. So often, their words would ring in my ears, “This hurts me more than it does you.” Oh, how I hated to hear those words and thought, “how ridiculous, I am the one receiving the punishment.”

He Inhabits Eternity

God’s Word is Alive! It breathes life into those who sincerely search for help, truth, answers, meaning, purpose, righteousness, and above all God Himself. Sometimes just a simple Scripture will rejuvenate and refill me so that my heart leaps and soul bounds in worship. My countenance goes from heavy and dark to uplifted and bright. Today’s verse Isaiah 57:15 did it for me. I just sat and stared at this verse for the longest time thinking about it. God just continues to stun me.

Two Lips

When Mikayla was very young, she told the same joke over and over, day after day. She asked me, “What flower grows between your chin and your nose?” Even though I had heard the joke multiple times every day, I played along with her every time and said, “I don’t know, Mikayla. Tell me.” Each time she would giggle and say, “Two – Lips, Mama. Two – Lips. Get it? You know the flower - tulips.”

Cast Your Crowns

One only needs to look around in society once to understand that pride has infiltrated every aspect of our culture. Pride causes people to steal from others because they want what they do not have. Pride causes people to lie about their accomplishments to make others look less accomplished than themselves. Pride causes couples to dissolve their marriage because one or both spouses cannot say “I’m sorry.” Pride causes rifts between a parent and a child because neither one can admit his own fault in the situation. Pride causes nations to go to war to prove that one has more power than the other.

A Righteous Judge
Daily Devotions 6/22/2009 3:57 AM
In the past several years, we, as a nation, have seen the appointment of many new Justices to the United States Supreme Court. Many of these nominations have not come without some sort of controversy over whether the justice has the correct qualifications to do this particular job. And sadly, many have been surrounded in controversy over whether they were the right person to fill the position – centering on previous judgments, race, religion, gender – things that could bring controversy into a political office.

Is It Worth It?

After the encounter with the rich young ruler, Peter declared that all of the disciples had done what this man could not do. They chose to leave every part of their former lives behind. They left their wives, children, businesses, security, warm beds, and cupboards of food. They left it all behind to follow Jesus and for the sake of the kingdom of God.

Read the Rules! - Part 2
Daily Devotions 6/18/2009 4:12 AM
Yesterday, I told you about the time that my daughter Mikayla broke one of her brackets on the braces of her teeth. I allowed her to buy rock candy and because neither one of us were familiar with the orthodontist’s rules, her bracket broke. When she told me the bad news, we faced each other and said simultaneously, “We have got to read the rules!”

Read the Rules!

My daughter Mikayla plays on a select soccer team. We enjoy the mother/daughter time when we get to travel to her games out of town. We especially love the tournaments because we get the whole weekend together. We recently went to a tournament in Nashville, TN. After a team dinner at the Rain Forest Café that weekend, the girls on the team went shopping in the café’s store. Mikayla and her teammate McKenna brought back rock candy sticks to ask their parents for permission to buy them.

Sometimes It's Hard to Be Good
Daily Devotions 6/16/2009 4:35 AM
The night before had been a disaster. Grace had tested every single boundary that she possibly could and then some. Every single action was a battle ground, and the lines had been drawn. Eating her food was a challenge, finishing her milk was a challenge, getting up the stairs for bed was a challenge, getting ready for bed was a challenge, brushing her teeth was a challenge – well you get the idea. And it migrated over to pretty much the rest of the family.

No Hiring Freeze
Daily Devotions 6/15/2009 4:05 AM
One needs only to turn on the television for the news or pick up a national newspaper to see all of the companies and organizations that have instituted hiring freezes for a certain period of time. Economic downturns typically force these types of actions into play by upper management and HR to attempt to limit the negative economic impact to their specific company. They believe that in conditions like this, they have enough people on board already to get the company’s goals accomplished.
