The Impossible
Daily Devotions 4/30/2009 4:05 AM
During the time of drought in Israel prophesied by Elijah as judgment for turning to other gods, God led him to stay with the widow at Zarephath. God miraculously provided for this widow and her son through the prophet Elijah. Even though they had this continuous provision from God, some time later tragedy struck. Her son became ill. He grew worse and worse until he stopped breathing.

Grand Entrance

I have been faithfully reading every night to my kids from a picture Bible that turns even the Books of the prophets into stories with pictures for every scene. When we studied Isaiah, we saw him plead with the people to destroy their idols and only worship God. He warned the kings what would happen if they continue in idolatry and disobedience, but the kings ignored the warnings.

A Sweet Perfume
Daily Devotions 4/28/2009 4:07 AM
Not that long ago, Grace’s grandmother gave her a small sample bottle of a wonderful fragrance called Beautiful by Estee Lauder. It is a very light fragrance for the most part. However, when a 4 year old and a 7 year old get into a perfume spraying contest, the end result can be most overwhelming. Apparently the two children decided it would be a fun idea to spray each other with the Beautiful perfume.

Into the Den

When was the last time that you had to stand up for something that you very much believed in but knew that it would cause you trouble in the end? Many days in my job there are things that come before me causing me to choose between the ways of the world and the ways of men. Even in our families, we must make choices sometimes about what we really believe in and are willing to fight for in this world.

Tears at the Hair Salon
Daily Devotions 4/24/2009 3:37 AM
Even though the girls are just 6 and 8 years old, for many years, they have gone with me to the Hair Salon. As much work as I have done to my hair, ha - I can be at the salon for up to three hours. So, we literally make a day of it. While I'm getting color and such, the girls get a wash, cut, and style. They love it and surprisingly behave for that long of a time!

Twelve Stones of Remembrance
Daily Devotions 4/23/2009 4:22 AM
I didn’t realize what God had been doing for the past few months until I had lunch with my good friend Kendra. She asked me about the Bible study that I was writing. I told her that God had me stop writing the Bible study and focus on some devotions from my life and journey with Him over the past twelve years. It was at that table in the restaurant that it hit me what God was doing.

The Time of Jacob's Trouble
Daily Devotions 4/22/2009 3:59 AM
While Daniel was studying the Scriptures written by Jeremiah, he realized that the Babylonian captivity would last 70 years. Jeremiah 29:10 says, “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place.” Knowing the end of the 70 years was near, Daniel cried out to God and confessed his sin and the sin of his people of Israel.

First Fruits
Daily Devotions 4/21/2009 3:53 AM
Recently the Lord was really speaking into my heart about how I start out my day and what types of “offerings” throughout the day I was making to Him. Was I focused on starting each day with Him and giving Him the first fruits of my labors, or was I waiting to see what else came along during the day and calling on Him when I needed Him? Was I giving Him the leftovers of my labors, the labors that were already battered and blemished?

Feet Washers
Daily Devotions 4/20/2009 4:08 AM
It was just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus did something for the disciples that likely burned in their memories for the rest of their days. Through all of the time that they had spent with Him, the disciples still pictured Jesus as a mortal king, who had come to save them from their Roman government oppression. They just could not comprehend that Jesus had truly come to serve and give His life as a ransom for many, instead of being served. So, when Jesus took off His outer garment one evening and got out a basin and a towel, their minds were reeling with what Jesus was about to do for them.

Step Into or Onto the Water

We are in the season known as the Passover in the Jewish world. It is called Easter in the Gentile church although I like to call it Resurrection weekend because, as we well know, the word Easter has some pagan roots as well as practices. Of course the Passover was a picture of Jesus, our spotless and unblemished Passover Lamb.
