With Confession Comes Healing

My mother’s favorite phrase was “Go outside and play.” As a result, I spent a lot of time outdoors growing up in rural Alabama. One summer day my cousin and I found ourselves attempting to scale a forbidden wall inside his barn. Half way up the wall I slipped and gashed my foot on what I now know to be shards of glass.

A Love For Learning

I recently took a test at work that identified my strengths through the book Strengths Finder by Tom Rath. The results pinged my top five strengths. I was amazed how well the test captured who I am. One of my strengths is that I am a learner. In the book, Tom Rath says, “You will always be drawn to the process of learning. The process…is especially exciting for you. You are energized by the steady and deliberate journey from ignorance to competence…

In His Footsteps

Many years ago, when I was a small girl, my family would travel to Florida for a week during the summer. A dear woman at my dad’s church owned a condominium down at a place called Madeira Beach, and she would allow us to stay there for a week to rest and relax as a family. There are so many incredible memories from those trips. But, one of those trips came back to me recently when I was thinking about my walk with God and my relationship with His Son, Jesus.

Our Protector

This summer I attended two churches’ reports of their mission trips. One church group went to the Dominican Republic. One church group went to Haiti. Both church groups told similar stories about the difference in safety precautions in these countries compared to our country. Some stories were about the hair-raising traffic rides and their near-death experiences on the roads. Some stories were about the construction fatalities.

Our family decided to let our son play flag football this year as his fall sport. I was excited about this prospect as I love football and watch whenever I am able. However, the team that we got on was not exactly star performance and struggled with all of the fundamentals of the game as most had never before played. They had a lot of fun playing, which is the entire point of flag football in my humble opinion, but they were typically out-powered and out-played the majority of the game.

Since I have returned from Asia, I have gotten sick. Last week, I had to leave work early because I had a viral infection that gave me chills. This week my doctor diagnosed me with asthmatic bronchitis. She prescribed for me some strong medication for my lungs. The first day that I took them I still went to work, but at lunchtime I had to call my husband to come get me. It was the first time that I have ever had to ask him to drive me home.

An Invitation to Dinner

Have you ever been in a corporate time of worship and it has felt spiritually dead? I sure have. In fact I just recently experienced this, and it was frustrating to say the least. I would like to share with you today something the Lord laid on my heart recently. Before I do, I want to say this: I know God is all powerful, and He can show up any place and at any time without our asking.

Unexplained Suffering
Daily Devotions 10/22/2008 2:10 AM
There are many times in our lives that we experience some type of suffering that we just do not understand why we are going through it at the time. And sometimes we see the suffering of others around us that we would love to be able to somehow take away in the midst of the circumstance. Several years ago, we started to notice that my father’s right arm had developed a tremor. He sought the advice of his doctor who called it an “essential tremor,” basically a muscle twitching that could not be controlled.

He Sets Up Kings

While I was in Penang, Malaysia, our driver said to my manager and me, “Oh, I hear that you have a new president in the United States now. Maybe he can pull your country out of this economic crisis that is affecting us, too.” We had to explain to our driver that the election had not occurred, and that the decision had not been made yet.

The Glitter of Gold

God recently blessed us with the opportunity to take an awesome family vacation to Florida and visit the local theme parks. He even blessed us so much that we were able to save our money ahead of time and pay for the entire vacation before we even left our state. We had such a great time and so enjoyed spending time together, including some of our extended family that was able to join us.
